The AC Doesn't Work and Here's Why

All the solar in the world won't keep you comfortable.Written because "insulation" and "airtightness" won't officially be mandated by code until the 2015 IECC is adopted here in Hawaii in March 2019, so we have a good number of houses with no insulation.  Many of them didn't "need" insulation when they were built because houses weren't conditioned, but now that it's easy…See More

Airsealing & Termites

I'm having crazy thoughts. Help me out here.I live in a termite area. A friend of mine just got a quote for about $3K to tent their house for termites.A lot of the cost of a termite tenting is for the labor to tent it. They tent it to keep the gas in.But houses here are sometimes pretty simple and I use the A- and B-rings a lot. So my thought is...what if we could run a blower door, air seal the house, and do a DIY bug bomb?Could airsealing be used as part of a termite-murdering process?See More

Managing Mold & Humidity (in Hawaii)

A blower door measures how tight a house isAir sealing done as part of the install, and after hacking holes into the house (and sealing others), total leakage only increased by 65 CFM50.  Still a B-ring house.---------------------------------------------I got a call from the east side of Hawaii, so I did what I always do.  I tested the house and collected some data.  The testing is important - no matter how well we think we know our houses, they can surprise us.  Without testing, it'd be like…See More
