Best HVAC Equipment for an Energy Efficient Homes

Most consumers have no idea that up to 50% of the energy used in a typical home is used for heating and cooling.

So it goes without saying that choosing energy efficient HVAC equipment can have a significant impact on yearly energy costs, as well as your comfort level.

If your home has 10 - 15 year old HVAC system, you may want to consider replacing it with an energy efficient system rated by Energy Star. You can save hundreds of dollars per year.

There are many factors that go into choosing energy efficient system, but the most important is the size of the unit. The lower the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER), the more energy it takes to cool the home. And the more insulated your home, the smaller the unit you need.  If you choose a unit that’s too small,  it won’t heat or cool properly. Contrastingly, if it’s too large, it will waste energy and your home will either be too hot or too cold.

A good idea is to have a load calculation performed that evaluates your home’s physical and thermal characteristics. With this information, any reputable HVAC company can find the right sized system for your needs.

Another important factor is the quality of your HVAC unit installation. Improper installs can reduce efficiency by as much as 30%, which of course increases your utility bill and could shorten the life of the equipment.

Buying equipment for the long haul is also advisable. Energy efficient units offer significant savings over time. If you have energy efficient equipment, make sure it is properly maintained, so it operates at it’s highest level.

Additionally, you should make sure to keep your unit and ductwork well maintained and free of dust and debris that accumulates significantly over time. Not only does a clogged HVAC unit and air duct system reduce your heating and air efficiency, but it causes a serious health risks for occupants, especially small children. At least once a year, hire a reputable air duct cleaning company that cleans the entire HVAC system.

When it comes to heating and cooling systems, energy-efficiency should be major factor in your purchasing decision. When we are talking about energy-efficiency, we are referring to the capability of your comfort system to cool or heat your home by using the least amount of energy.
