Tired of Blackouts? Get Off The Power Grid!

I live in Northern California where PG&E has recently been shutting off power to large areas and populations because of the fire risk PG&E’s infrastructure poses, particularly when the weather is dry and windy. This has been causing all sorts of trouble for people. What if you are on medical equipment that must not be shut down? What if everything in the fridge/freezer in your restaurant spoils? Does your business need electricity to function?! There are so many what-ifs.There is…See More

The ACEEE Hot Water Forum

The Hot Water Forum (HWF) has been around for about ten years, meeting yearly.  I missed one, once and still regret it. It’s a mix of manufacturers, code folks, researchers, utilities, local, state and federal governments, engineers and the odd hot water nerd, like me. People come from all over the US and some other countries to attend. It’s the place to learn what new…See More

Clues a Water Heater Gives You

If only we would listen, water heaters would have a lot to tell us, their owners.  Water heaters, sorta like people, don’t appreciate not being heard. So, why do you think heaters fail on holidays and weekends?  They just want attention! Most folks only pay attention when the heater has failed and they need a new one on Christmas morning, or some other inconvenient time. …See More

The Philosophy of Good Plumbing

Posted on November 15, 2019 at 1:07pm 0 Comments

There are, or should be some guiding lights to follow when designing and building good plumbing systems. The basic concepts are simple.

  1. The system should meet the needs and wants of the occupants.
  2. The system must be safe.
  3. The system should be very energy and water efficient.
  4. The system should be simple and durable.

The first point sounds simple, but did you know that over 70% of the hot water draws in most homes…
