The Philosophy of Good Plumbing

There are, or should be some guiding lights to follow when designing and building good plumbing systems. The basic concepts are simple. The system should meet the needs and wants of the occupants. The system must be safe. The system should be very energy and water efficient. The system should be simple and durable. The first point sounds simple, but did you know that over 70% of the hot water draws in most homes do not deliver hot water? Who is willing to wait for hot water when rinsing hands? Most…See More

"Hi Daniel, My most basic approach to servicing tank type heaters is to check and replace the anode as needed and do the same with the T&P valve. Sediment varies with water quality and water usage. Still, I've had heaters last over fifty…"

"I believe that it's not too difficult to get a 25+ year service life out of a modern water heater if you flush, de-lime, change the anode rod regularly. Mag-erad is a great product for de-liming and de-scaling. Most homeowners probably…"

"> In our dream, long lived, efficient systems would have minimal environmental impact. And if we are going to move away from fossil fuels (mandatory January 1st in a bunch of CA cities) it seems heat pump water heaters should be a focus, not…"

Hot Water Heaven

The real world isn't an easy place to be idealistic about hot water systems and what could be.  Many compromises are made in cost, quality, expectation and education.  Money and ego play a part as well.  We'd like to daydream out loud for a bit and share some 'what could be's" and 'only if's" as they relate to hot water. The ideal water heating system would be supremely…See More

Larry Weingarten replied to Daniel Baur-McGuire's discussion How to Insulate Exposed Outdoor Ductwork?? Help
"Hello, Another approach would be to wrap the duct in fiberglass and then use a sheet metal (aluminum) cover, caulked at the seams to prevent any sort of moisture from getting in. This will be much easier to modify later on.  Yours,  Larry"
