Benefits of air sealing:

-Fewer drafts, even temperatures
-Lower energy bills
-Helps to keep pests, insects and critters out
-Minimized dust, mold and mildew
-A more comfortable, energy efficient home
-Significantly cut annual heating and cooling costs by reducing the load on your HVAC system.Increase your comfort by reducing drafts, regulating temperature throughout the house
-Improve building durability/prevent moisture problems
-Decrease the size of heating and cooling equipment required, which saves money on upfront equipment costs as well as long-term operating costs

Air sealing leads to savings!

To save energy. Air leaks allow your heated air to leak out, requiring energy to heat up the cold outside air replacing the leaked air.

Up to about half of your fuel bill is to heat the outside air that is replacing the leaked air.

If you don't seal the air leaks in the ceilings, the air leaking out through air permeable insulation, such as fiberglass or loose cellulose, will make the insulation much less effective. That is similar to wearing a wool sweater on a windy day in winter. Wear a windbreaker over that sweater and you will feel much warmer.

Proper air sealing is critical not only to your comfort, but also to your home’s energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Air leaks through poorly-insulated walls, drafty windows and doors, or openings made for pipes, wires or other services can let heated or cooled air escape.

The first step to any performance upgrade to a home is to properly separate the indoors from the outdoors.

The key here is the word "properly." A shell that is too loose is like living in a tent. But, on the other extreme, a shell that's too tight would be like living in a tupperware container.

Between the two extremes is a balance point where you have enough fresh air flowing through the home to keep the home comfortable, healthy and safe but the home is also able to maintain a constant level of thermal comfort because conditioned air is kept inside the home.

ASHRAE 62.2 tells of that balance point.

Hope that helps.

Has anyone installed Constant Airflow Regulators in conjunction with Sealing ?

As you want to know what are the benefits of air sealing and why it is important. Then find out the below-mentioned points to know more about it

  • Lower energy bills – Air sealing ensures the lower electricity bills
  • Improved home comfort

  • Enhanced air quality

Most attics have insulation which helps reduce heat loss. But it won't stop the air flow. Insulation can actually conceal cracks, gaps, and holes, through which the pressurized air from your home is driven to the attic. You should check the staining, which is usually an indicator of air leak. The benefits of sealing cracks and openings reduce drafts and cold spots, improving comfort. The recommendation is to reduce air leakage as much as possible by providing a controlled ventilation as needed. However, to do this properly you should contact your HVAC service company.

With effective air sealing and insulation heating and air cooling systems will not need to work as hard to provide more improved air quality. An effective air sealing can reduce the amount of humidity, dust, pollen, and pests that can enter inside home. It also help to improve air quality along with durability. The insulation work also help you to reduce heat loss. It doesn't affect the air flow.
