Does anyone know the benefits or disadvantages of cross laminated polyethylene vs non cross laminated for a crawl space membrane?
I'm just not finding any info on what the differences or benefits are.
Would you use regular sheet 10 mil polyethylene or 4 mil cross laminated polyethylene?
Are your referring specifically to a closed crawl space? It makes a difference in the thickness necessary to maintain a good air and vapor seal given the potential for foot traffic.
Closed, conditioned crawlspace. Not high traffic, I would say no traffic. It is a half basement/ crawl. closed cell spray foam on crawl walls, poly will be sealed w acoustical sealant.
I am planning on 10 mil poly and the contractor wants to use sheet polyethylene.not cross laminated as recommended. Trying to figure out if cross laminated is really needed.
Daniel, Cross laminated poly has a higher tear strength but you should use 10 mil or greater or it's a waste of time, they tear to easy and defeat the purpose of the install.
Thanks Dave Taylor, I figured it had to do with tearing resistance but I was not sure.
I use 20 mil poly on my crawlspaces and now a high traffic 90 mil has been added to the marketplace. Usually they have a scrim fiber between layers to resist tearing. Remember a 1/2" hole negates the purpose of sealing in 1500 ft. so the better products the least problems down the road. Spend for the acrylic tape yes its expensive but it eliminates problems now and future.
