Zero-energy (ZE) and zero-energy ready (ZER) homes currently comprise less than 2% of single family residential new construction, largely due to outdated or overstated cost assumptions. Because single family homes make up over 40% of the energy consumed by our building stock, increasing market penetration of ZE homes is essential to helping cities meet their aggressive greenhouse gas emission goals while creating a more clean, prosperous, and secure low-carbon future.

Michael Gartman is a Senior Associate on Rocky Mountain Institute’s Buildings team. Michael utilizes a background in statistical analysis and energy modeling to develop analytical tools geared toward informing and facilitating real estate portfolio optimization strategies, synthesizing the deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects over time and space. Michael brings a diverse range of expertise in the construction industry to RMI’s buildings practice.
Alisa Petersen is a Senior Associate on Rocky Mountain Institute’s Buildings team where she focuses on breaking down barriers to increasing market penetration of zero energy buildings in both the residential and commercial sector. Prior to joining RMI, Alisa worked for Seventhwave, a nonprofit energy efficiency company in Madison Wisconsin, where she served as an Energy Engineer and Project Manager.
