Ed, I might be confused about your question, but the basement IS included in the CFA, and is NOT included in the height above grade (except for the part that is above grade).

Corbett says that the CFA is everything inside the envelope and he states that a garage, of course, is not included.  Then he says to measure the house from the ground to the top floor ceiing to get height.  But then when he does a sample calculation on a house in Chicago, he doesn't include the basement even though he has measured part of the height of foundation.  In my limited experience, every house in Chicago has a basement - so is it included or not?

I don't think I want my staff running around with scientific calculators, but it is a good explanation of what goes into the math.

If there is vermiculite or asbestos present and depressurization is not allowed do you not use an average blower door test?

For those of you who might find these simplifications not quite so simple, check out the RED Calc Free calculation tool at:http://www.residentialenergydynamics.com/REDCalcFree/Tools/ASHRAE62.... With this free web based software, no calculations are required and it includes the Alternative Compliance path for existing dwellings. It also helps size rates for intermittent whole-building ventilation.
