A university in the UK built a zero energy home that is cost effective with a conventional home. The key was the glass-on-glass solar modules that were not just on the roof, they WERE the roof.

The installation cost of the solar roof is zero because you avoid having to pay for installing a conventional roof. Plus the attic heat can be used for space heating in the winter.

Yes they had thought replacement roofs fit their business model years ago. A roofer would install it North. I doubt their crews carry a compass or understand the SUN, latitudes or seasonal orientations. 2016 DOW coming out Version 2.0 @ 40 WATTS per shingle. I build them in my modular homes at the factory and have success. There is no inspection like panels because its function is a roof who happens to produce electricity.

Dow started this roof  4-5 yr ago just did not take off.   building and zoning inspecter got in way and lack of training.  One I looked at faced north.
