We are very sad to announce the sudden passing of our colleague, Carol Markell. Carol died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 19, in the company of her closest friends while on vacation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. As Home Energy’s Advertising and Marketing Manager for over a decade, Carol developed relationships with scores of Home Performance industry professionals and advertisers, networking at conferences and in countless phone calls. In so doing, she helped grow the home performance community as well as the success of Home Energy magazine.

Maggie Forti, our Office Manager will be responding to Carol's e-mails and voicemail messages in the interim. If you need to contact Maggie directly, please call her at 510-524-5405, Ext. 111 or e-mail her at contact@homeenergy.org.

We'd like to invite our readers and advertisers to share any thoughts, experiences, or remembrances of Carol by commenting on this blog below, or on our website. As of now, memorial service arrangements are pending, however, we'll be sure to update them here when they've been set.

The outside world cannot appreciate how much she contributed to the close-knit Home Energy family, sharing in all our own personal joys and sorrows. Carol held much of the magazine’s history within her very fine mind and her good counsel will be irreplaceable. We have no doubt that she will be missed in the wider community as much as she will be missed here at Home Energy.

UPDATE: A memorial will be conducted on August 25 between 11 am and 1 pm at the Elderberry picnic area of Alvarado Park, in the north end of Wildcat Canyon Regional Park in Richmond, California. (At the McBryde and Park Ave intersection in Richmond.) Directions can be found at ebparks.org/Page151.aspx. There is limited street parking and additional parking beyond the entrance at the Wildcat Canyon staging area approximately 1/4 mile farther on Park Ave.

Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. If you grow roses, please feel free to bring some to decorate the picnic area. Donations to Point Isabel Dog Owners (pido.org) or any another charity that reflects Carol’s commitment to the welfare of animals are welcome.

It's like losing a member of the family!  Carol was concerned about the people she talked to way beyond energy efficiency.  She was constantly trying to get people to "Seize the Day!"  She was a great help to my daughters and helping them to find their way.  And she always had an affinity for us fellow SU graduates.  She was a breath of fresh air at conferences for us building science geeks.  "Sit down and tell me what's going on!" she would demand in the kindest possible fashion.  I will indeed miss her and her smile.

Carol was part of the "DNA" of Home Energy Pros.  She helped nurture HEP into a vibrant network, while sharing her own valuable content. Let's all honor Carol's memory by continuing to nurture the community and expand its positive influence.

Carol was a wonderful collaborator on the launch of the Home Energy Pros community. From the very start, she was enthusiastic about the possibilities of a virtual community and she made sure that everyone in the home performance world knew about our project. A team player and a good friend. She will be missed! My heart goes out to all her friends at Home Energy magazine.

Wow, I just emailed her a week ago. We met at the ACI conference in Baltimore, I was very impressed with her enthusiasm and knowledge, even in that brief meeting. She will be missed.
