Rebuild the Dream

Many readers will remember Van Jones from the 2009 ACI conference. He is a smart guy and a brilliant presenter. He also, of course, got on someone's sh*t list and had to leave his post in the Obama administration. Van will be on the web tonight via MoveOn.org's Rebuild the Dream Launch Event at 8:15 ET talking about the economy. If you have a chance to tune it, I'm sure you'll find it interesting.

Advanced certification for RESNET Thermographers

I’m just back from the RESNET national conference in Orlando and I am very excited to report that RESNET certification is now available!

 

What’s needed?

• You must be a RESNET Building Performance Auditor or a Rater

• You must have 3 months experience using thermal imaging and a blower door

• You must have taken a training course that complies with the standards of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT)

Several months from now, Cedar Falls residents will be able to look at a thermal image of their home from a comfortable seat at their home computer.

It will be possible because of two men who crisscrossed the skies over Cedar Falls through the night Thursday, carefully photographing every building in the city with a thermal imaging camera.

Cedar Falls Utilities took advantage of a federal stimulus grant program to create the thermal images. Homeowners and businesses will be able to look at the results and determine if and where more insulation could save money.

The thermal images will display heat loss coming from rooftops.

Pete Olson, CFU energy services manager, said attic insulation provides a lot of bang for the buck.

"It's usually the easiest and most economical way to improve energy efficiency," Olson said.

CFU offers incentives for insulation, picking up 60 percent of the cost for approved, contractor-completed jobs.

CFU teamed with the University of Northern Iowa Center for Energy and Environmental Education and GeoTREE on this project. The CEEE secured a $180,000 grant from the Iowa Office of Energy Independence, money that came from federal stimulus spending.

The two-man crew of George Tatalovich, a pilot from Kucera International of Willoughby, Ohio, and Jason Faulring, an engineer from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y., was scheduled to make more than 50 passes over Cedar Falls.
