Considering Permaculture &/or Transition

Some who work to increase energy efficiency and intelligent/wise use of energy are, and some will be, permaculturists.  Some are involved in Transition initiatives.  Here's a home base for any/all interested in the relationships and prospects.

David Holmgren:  "People, their buildings and the ways they organize themselves are central to permaculture."

The phenomenon called Transition was hatched in the UK and for several years has been spreading around the world.  Transition is possible, transition is probable and nearly inevitable.

  • Transition US site (official)
  • Transition in Action site (Global & unofficial, but sometimes lively.  Here you can find links to similar sites dedicated to particular states, territories....)

Hi George.  I'm happy for your participation.  You asked "Can you elaborate on your inclusion of the word "Considering" in the name for this group?"  I can.

I used it for three reasons:

  • to be welcoming (no one must commit to anything first)
  • to play on All Things Considered (particulars of permaculture; particulars as they pertain to home energy performance; and sustainability)
  • to suggest activity (we're doing something here).

Did you imagine anything other than these?  Do we have a problem?  There certainly isn't a lot of doing.  (In the past 10 months I've been on Facebook more than on Home Energy Pros.)

Thanks for the welcome message David.

I think this group is very important for this site, despite a small following at the moment. Bill Mollison -- perhaps the father of permaculture -- advocates working by a definition of "sustainable" that gets to the heart of our collective work as home energy professionals. To paraphrase, he says that to be "sustainable," a system must produce energy, sufficient to completely replace itself at least once within its lifecycle. While this may present a challenge too tough for many systems to actually achieve, I believe it greatly clarifies the edges of an important concept, frequently subjected to sloppy use and implementation.

Can you elaborate on your inclusion of the word "Considering" in the name for this group?

The permaculture enthusiasts on Facebook are happy to be connected, at least in my experience.  If you want more peeks into the culture, send some friend requests.

A current discussion at the Transition Vermont site pushed me to post:

When folks regard the living life support system, as it manifests where they are, with passion and discover or develop visions of life in harmony with it, their consciences will alter their missions and support/reinforce the various disciplines of harmonious coexistence.

Stephen R. Covey's organization has announced a 175 city tour with a complimentary 2-hour exploration of 5 choices to extraordinary productivity.  Learn more and register at http://the5choices.com/solution/index.html

Remember, Covey is dedicated to a production/production capability balance; the near term and depletion are neither foremost nor commended.

I'll attend the one in Boston in September.

Is there a Transition initiative in/near your area?  Those folks want your help!
