Benefits of air sealing:

-Fewer drafts, even temperatures

Air sealing leads to savings!

To save energy. Air leaks allow your heated air to leak out, requiring energy to heat up the cold outside air replacing the leaked air.

Up to about half of your fuel bill is to heat the outside air that is replacing the leaked air.

If you don't seal the air leaks in the ceilings, the air leaking out through air permeable insulation, such as fiberglass or loose cellulose, will make the insulation much less effective. That is similar to wearing a wool sweater on a windy day in winter. Wear a windbreaker over that sweater and you will feel much warmer.

Proper air sealing is critical not only to your comfort, but also to your home’s energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Air leaks through poorly-insulated walls, drafty windows and doors, or openings made for pipes, wires or other services can let heated or cooled air escape.

Air sealing is critical to your energy conservation efforts and can save lots of utility bills. Air leakage is also a big cause of discomfort, air pollution and moisture problems. 

The first step to any performance upgrade to a home is to properly separate the indoors from the outdoors.

The key here is the word "properly." A shell that is too loose is like living in a tent. But, on the other extreme, a shell that's too tight would be like living in a tupperware container.

Between the two extremes is a balance point where you have enough fresh air flowing through the home to keep the home comfortable, healthy and safe but the home is also able to maintain a constant level of thermal comfort because conditioned air is kept inside the home. 

ASHRAE 62.2 tells of that balance point.
