What About DIY Geothermal Heat Exchangers for Heat Pumps?

Many of our pros here are also DIY experts. You may have done or plan to do some geothermal projects. Do you favor a contractor or yourself for the actually installation?

To initiate the discussion, heat pump performances are closely linked to the outdoor heat exchanger. A geothermal heat exchanger can boost the performances substantially because it is warmer than air in winter and cooler than air in summer. However, the installation by an outsider can be very costly.

To have the advantages of a geothermal heat pump without the high cost, Do-It-Yourself may be the best way to go. For what I think, I have published an article for http://heatexch.com/2013/07/12/diy-geothermal-heat-exchangers-for-h....

Please add your comment to that article or here. Hope this discussion and your comment can help to get more geothermal heat pump installed with less costs.

     Thanks,

     Perry from http://heatExch.com.

Ground loop costs are the biggest expense of Geothermal. Doing the digging and installing the loop DIY sounds like a great way to cut installation costs.

What about sizing?  I have write the basic steps to size a GHE.  It would be great if you can check me out and give some comment. http://homeenergypros.lbl.gov/forum/topics/sizing-a-ground-heat-exc....
