Hi Diane,

I voted, but the most important diagnostic tool in my bag has always been my IR camera.  Part of what makes it valuable is the interpretation of what it sees.  Where there are many new low cost IR cameras coming out, they lack the training and experience to really know what they are looking at.  In addition to air leaks I frequently always find water leaks as well as heat signatures from things that should not be hot, like extension cords under a rug. Yikes!

Second in line would be my blower door and manometer.  Maybe that is second and third.

Bud

Bud, Thanks for your comment. I revised the poll so you can select more than one answer to the poll and add another tool like manometer. :)

Blower door. Hands down.

Without my IR camera I can still get great results.

Without my blower door, my IR camera is near worthless (beyond being a sales gimmick. Gimmicks don't work well with our sales process because we heavily educate.)

Also, the blower door is a measurement tool. It illuminates AND quantifies the problem. The IR camera illuminates but does not quantify.

I agree with Ted. If I could bring just one piece of equipment it would be the blower door. It has the ability to run several meaningful diagnostic tests.

Blower door.  It shows the invisible.  IR a close second.

2 my brain, so I can discern the applicability of some of the advice to my particular daily different situation
3 all the equipment that helps my brain determine which hypothesis is applicable to my situation on that specific day.

Who knew the first time they held an IR a house under IR could show two parts of the same wall so each part is the inverse of the other?
With 10+ years experience using IR I once saw a wall in winter that was dead cold from 3 ft off the floor to the ceiling. I smugly said the wall wasn't insulated at the top. Some nincompoop must have used cellulose and a rented machine to do that job years ago.
Too bad I missed the paint tray and roller in the room, and the owner with paint spatter all over her hair.
Good thing her friend had recommended us and we both could laugh it off when the owner said 'are you sure you aren't just seeing the wet paint I just put there?'
