HI.  I'm looking for a database that could help me assess the average energy use of a home (per square foot, probably), separated by climate zone (HVAC, not USDA).  I do audits all over the country and would like to find a source whereby I can assess easily if the home is above or below average for its location.

There is the great RECS database, but it separates by the four major geographic zones, not by climate zone.  So, even if I could find a list of zip codes by climate zone, I could extrapolate what I need from that using the RECS.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!

Hi Scott.

I dont know of a database that you are referring to.  I was always under the impression that each state had its own list like that, at least for roof coatings.  I believe there was 13 temp zones for roof coatings in CA.  Some coatings were not recommended for zones 1, 2, 3 because it got too cold and the coating would lose it's bond.  Other coatings were not recommended for zones 8, 9 and 10 because it got too hot and the same thing could happen.

It has been several years since I have seen THAT list.  Could this be the one you are thinking of?

Hal

You know those maps you can find for energy code climate zone specific reference.  That's what I want except printed out - as a spreadsheet, best of all - by zip code, or county.  Thanks anyway.

I posted the question on HEP's facebook page and Bill Spohn commented:

Try http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/.../ba_climateguide_7_1.pdf

Thanks.  That's the best source I've yet found, and maybe the best that's out there.  Zip codes would be easier though.

Hi Scott -- I recently had to build a zip code to climate zone mapping spreadsheet for a project I'm working on. I realize this post is quite old now, but thought I'd check in to see if this was something you still needed. If so, let me know and I'll get it to you.

Thanks.

Hey Keith

I ended up having to create it myself also.  I'd be curious how you collated all the relevant data.  Mine mostly came from the RECS.  You?

Hi Scott,

I loaded zip code & county data from the U.S. Census bureau into a database, which I combined with county -- climate zone mapping data that a colleague pulled from REScheck. In the end I have a table with all 38,000+ U.S. zip codes mapped to a climate zone and moisture regime.

Creating a similar mapping from the RECS data must have been a fair bit of work!

Hi Scott & Keith,

Would you guys be willing to share your databases with the rest of us?

Ken

Hi Ken -- I've attached an excel version of my mapping table here. If anyone has any questions or comments, please let me know.

Thanks.

Thanks for sharing this, Keith.

Just one question, are the DoE and CEC (California Energy Commission) climate zones different?  I live and work in 94024 (California CZ 4) but your listing shows it as CZ 3.

Ken

No problem at all Ken. I'm not that familiar with the CEC climate zones, but they are different. My project was looking at the climate zones used by IECC (2006 specifically), which are 1-8 with an optional moisture description. The CEC zones run from 1-16.

- Keith

Leave it to my beloved California to be different.  I'll bet the other 49 states use the DoE climate zones.

Ken
